Getting started

This page will help you get started with Datawrapper's API.

Welcome to Datawrapper's API documentation. Once you're all set up you'll be able to use the API to create, edit, delete and publish charts as well as change your account settings. If you run into any difficulties along the way please don't hesitate to get in contact at support@datawrapper.de. We're happy to help!

Creating an API token

In order to use Datawrapper's API, you will need to have an API token. To create one go to My account by clicking on the menu button on the top right and selecting it from the dropdown list.

At the bottom of the page you will see the section API Access Tokens. Click on the Create new Personal Access Token button.

You will then be prompted to enter a name for your token. This can be whatever you like, it's just for your personal reference.

Your API token will be immediately generated. You can create as many as you like and revoke them at any time using the revoke button.

Testing your API token

To make sure that this worked, test your new API token with this request:

curl -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN_HERE" https://api.datawrapper.de/account

If everything has been done correctly then you should get get the following response:

{
   "status":"ok",
   "data":{
      "user":{
         "id":1234,
         "email":"youremail@datawrapper.de",
         "name":null,
         "website":null,
         "socialmedia":null,
         "organization":{
            "id":"your-organisation-id",
            "name":"Your Organisation"
         }
      }
   }
}%

If you are unable to get this response and can't figure out why or need any help getting set up, please don't hesitate to get in contact at support@datawrapper.de.

Otherwise, congratulations! You're all set up and ready to start using Datawrapper's API!
